Dream Catcher Classics Playing Cards -- by Bosco

In this post, we talk to Bosco, the fabulous designer behind Dream Catcher Classics Playing Cards, a deck that successfully raised nearly HK $60,000 in funds with 77 backers. The Dream Catcher Classics Playings Cards embodies something that many of us card collectors have... a dream. Bosco's dream was to create his own brand of playing cards for the card collecting community, Cardists, and magicians. At only 15 years old, Bosco is now living that dream where his deck will be in the hands of all different kinds of playing card enthusiasts...

Bosco's story behind his deck is one that we can learn a lot from whether that be in the playing card collecting community, Cardistry, Magic, or in your own ventures outside of the hobby.

Bosco -- Dream Catcher Classics

"It looks ordinary but means extraordinary."

"Let me introduce myself... I am Bosco from Hong Kong, the founder of DreamCatcherYch. I am 15 and I am a magician. I have just put out my first deck -- Dream Catcher Classics -- and feel free to check out my Instagram as well : @hereisboscoych."

❈ What made you first get into collecting playing cards and/or Cardistry?

"For me, actually, I have just gotten into Cardistry for less than 1 year, [though] I have always been a magician and sure for now as well. Cardistry was not something I [was] familiar with or [something] I got interested in the past. But I would say from [the start], I watched more and more videos of Cardists doing what they did, especially on Instagram. I started to realized [that I was] attracted by the art of Cardistry. Then I started to learn different basics, but it's not easy [for] me... I think [most] people that start getting into Cardistry, [like me]... it takes 6 months [or] even more to just learn a simple move that all the Cardists [have mastered]. I just wanted to give up every time... I got kind of impatient, but at last I will pick up it again and again. I [have] now become much more passionate about Cardistry. Some of the Cardistry stuff has even become an inspiration for my Magic."

❈ What inspired you to create your own brand of playing cards?

"The biggest reason that inspired me to create my own brand of cards is that since I saw people like Cardists, collectors, magicians etc. holding different brands of cards, I wanted be one of the brands that people will know... everyone will hold cards or products from myself, and it's always my dream to have a place to express my ideas to the public and bring it to life. That pushed me to create my own brand."

 What was the process like?

"Take the Dream Catcher Classics deck as an example... it took me [nearly] 2 years of time to come up with the final design, which all of you are looking at right now and that [I have] done by myself. From the start, since I am not quite familiar with how the designing process should be, (it's my first time), I worked with Photoshop to design the cards at first. That's obviously not a suitable way to deal with some designing work and, for sure, the design that came out from Photoshop [was] kind of terrible... but [it was] still an important step to start the whole designing process. If I didn't start the designing process with Photoshop, then I won't [transition] into using Adobe illustrator [to] get the final design. It's an interesting improvement from using photos from the internet to group them into a design to really drawn all the things by myself into the final design. In this process, I came across a lot of different designs to [finally] get to the final one."

"I came up with the Dream Catcher theme for the first deck I have put out because when I was trying to come up with something... I realized everyone has their dreams and having my own branded deck is one of my dreams, as well.  That's why I came up with the design and theme, as our Kickstarter campaign mentioned, If you have dreams, ' JUST CATCH IT '."

Everyone can doubt your thoughts and ideas [except for] yourselfThat's why when we are facing difficulties, it is important to be yourself and keep doing what you are doing." - Bosco

❈ What do you think makes your brand stand out for collectors and the Cardistry community?

"Firstly, I think what makes my brand stands out in the community will be everything we will put out is not just the product itself but the messages and meanings hiding behind the ideas... like what I have [expressed] in the Kickstarter campaign of the DreamCatcher Classics deck. 'It looks ordinary but means extraordinary'. "

"Especially in the community of Cardistry, collectors, we always tend to bring designs or ideas that have not been widely spread or popularized and not repeating the same formula for the design of playing cards. Like the Dream Catcher Classics deck, which is a deck with the Dream Catcher theme, not [many] decks will take it as a theme. That's how we make the branding of DreamCatcherYch unique and different from others. We are looking forward to bringing more and more designs and ideas that not just apply on playing cards... but [instead] more."

❈ What is the hardest part of creating your own brand and deck?

"I have met a lot of difficulties during these days of creating, no matter [whether it is] my own brand or the cards. Apart from many technical difficulties, I think the hardest part through the whole journey is getting others support to what I have done... also, to know how to apply others suggestions or even heavy criticism on the design of the cards, the ideas etc. I am 15 now and [I was] even younger when I started."

"Once I have told my ideas to everyone, most of the comments I had received are [along the lines of] that they think I always 'dream too big '. Under these kinds of doubts (and most of the people didn't really support me of doing these kinds of things, like funding my cards with Kickstarter), they think with my age, I should put more effort into studying... not doing what they think is useless like creating a brand for myself."

"How I deal with these kind of difficulties will always be positive to those dream-crushing opinions and take action to answer those doubts, show them they are wrong. Everyone can doubt your thoughts and ideas [except for] yourself. That's why when we are facing difficulties, it is important to be yourself and keep doing what you are doing."

❈ What made you choose collaborating with Cartamundi to print your decks?

"For the choice of the card manufacturer, Cartamundi, they are always been nice to work with and cards that are produced from them like Copag310 gave me a great impression of the company. In a more objective view, Cartamundi is always improving the company and the quality of the cards. The true linen b9 finish that came out from them are definitely a game changer in the playing cards industry, and they are rising so fast in the whole playing cards manufacturers list. We always want the best for our supporters and customers... that's why we collaborate with Cartamundi for the printing of the Dream Catcher Classics. Their true linen b9 finish (slimline) is definitely one of the best choices for Cardists or magicians in the market."

❈ Do you have any advice for those who want to get into card collecting, magic, and/or Cardistry?

"So I think I will talk about some advices from my experiences for getting into magic.... Everyone has a different point of view for magic... and that's only my opinion. I think the most important thing for magic is the magician herself or himself should be a 'magical' person, simply believe in magic. If you yourself don't even believe in magic, you won't let the spectators believe in such impossible things. Try to let your spectators simply believe in that instead of doubting it. That's always my goal for every single performances."

"For those who start getting into magic , it's always great to step out from your room and perform to a 'real person'. Since then, I believe you will get better and better in every single performance in the future."

 A note from Bosco...

"As you may know, the Kickstarter campaign of the DreamCatcher Classics deck has been successfully funded, and thanks a lot for those who support us. Everyone should have their dreams, no matter how big or small. I believe we can't live without dreams. Dreams let us always live with hopes. If you have dreams, simply bring it alive and don't be afraid to fail. Especially when you are doing something not many people are familiar with... you will definitely face a lot of doubts."
"Take being a magician as a career or take myself as an example, the Dream Catcher Classics deck's Kickstarter campaign was fail the first time and only got 13% funded. I worked harder and harder, applying some of the suggestions from others, and finally came back with a better plan and got over 100% funded. That proved we should always work on our dreams, not for the results, but for the whole process."
