๐Ÿ‚ฎ๐ŸƒŽ๐Ÿƒž๐Ÿ‚ผ

We're excited to begin our new blog post series interviewing various playing card deck designers! In these posts, you'll learn all about the people behind your favorite decks and the different processes by which they design these stunning cards. We hope that this series will allow collectors to connect with designers and get some insight from them about our community and the hobby itself.

In this post, we'll learn a bit about deck and card design from a young and upcoming designer Lucas, the mind behind VHS Playing Cards, which is a brand new deck that will soon be launched on Kickstarter in the coming months. Lucas is currently collaborating with Carbon Creations Card Company, the creators of Oink Oink Playing Cards, on this deck.

VHS Playing Cards

Introduction...

"Hello! My name is Lucas. My personal instagram is @lucas._.magic. I am the designer of the current deck [VHS Playing Cards] for @C4Cards as well as their renderer."

What made you first get into collecting playing cards and/or Cardistry?

"The first thing that got me into Cardistry and magic was a friend. He had started, and when I met him I was immediately interested in what he was doing."

♦ How long have you been involved in Cardistry? ♦

"I’ve been doing magic and Cardistry since my seventh grade year, and I am about to be a high school Junior. That makes it about 4-5 years, which I never realized. Wow!"

♦ What inspired you to create your own brand of playing cards?

"The thing that first inspired me to make my own cards was just me wishing that the decks existed. I always design based off of what I wish already happened and go from there."

♦ Did you have other people to collaborate with? ♦

"Yes! I have had many friends help me with design aspects as well as my partners. I decided I didn’t want to produce this deck alone, because it was scary. So I decided to collaborate with my friends over at @C4Cards (@curtis.lee.26 and @mzcards) who had recently just released their first deck, the Oink Oink playing cards."

♦What was the process like? ♦

"The design process from the original back design to now has been about 2 years. Of course I wasn’t working on this deck the entire time though."

"The design process was mostly simple, I had the idea for a VHS tape on the back of a deck, so the first thing I did was design that. Choosing a font to fit was also important, the font Bungee has since become my favorite, and my choice for this process. Next came the colors, I didn’t want to use a palette, so I actually hand picked the colors until I got what I wanted."

What do you think makes your brand stand out for collectors and the Cardistry community?

"I’m not sure how much my brand actually stands out so far. I’m definitely not a known name by any means. I always customize faces, as standard faces bore me and others. My decks definitely aren’t collectible, as they don’t exist yet, but hopefully one day they will be."

Which design of yours is your favorite?

"I have designed a couple different decks. Most haven’t seen the light of day. VHS is definitely my favorite ever. Pastel VHS is a fan favorite that will hopefully be the second edition."

♦ Do you have advice for those who want to get into card collecting, magic, and/or Cardistry? ♦

"I have a bit of advice. Make sure to post and do what you want, not what others want. Get the decks you want instead of getting decks just for the hype."
